Defibrillator installed at Rotherham train station

The device was installed by Northern Rail, which has placed them in 13 stations across Yorkshire.

The defibrillators are clearly visible at each location and are simple and safe to use, with the machine giving clear spoken instructions on what to do should somebody be suffering a heart attack.

Once in position the defibrillator will detect the heart’s rhythm and deliver a shock if one is needed.

Natalie Loughborough, Customer Service Director for Northern Rail, said: “This piece of equipment is worth its weight in gold and across the country, countless lives have been saved by the provision of the community public access defibrillator (CPAD) in public spaces. Last year one of our most recently installed defibrillators was used by a member of our team to help save the life of a customer, which is fantastic.

“We are incredibly proud to be working in partnership with the Yorkshire Ambulance Service and of our people who are already using this life saving equipment at some of our busiest stations across the region.”

Emma Scott, Community Defibrillation Officer at Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust, said: “We know that in many medical emergencies the first few minutes are critical and if effective treatment can be performed, lives can be saved and disability reduced. The importance of the chain of survival, including early recognition, calling 999, bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation and early defibrillation, cannot be underestimated.

“Having easy access to a CPAD means that immediate life-saving care can be provided in an emergency situation, such as cardiac arrest, in the vital minutes before the ambulance arrives.

“These pieces of kit really do have the potential to save more lives and are an important asset to public places such as stations.
