Day for tigers is a roaring success

A roaring day out at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park was dedicated to raising awareness of the plight of endangered tigers.

The dangers faced by the majestic Amur tiger, the largest big cat in the world, were highlighted with events marking International Tiger Day.

The Yorkshire Wildlife Park is home to six Amur tigers, including a family of three cubs born last year.

The YWP Foundation has been instrumental in the global mission to save the species – raising funds to help protect the animals living in the wild.

The Branton-based park has already raised more than £5,000 for the cause this year.

Visitors to the park on the day were captivated by the sight of Tschuna and 16-month-old cubs Hector, Hope and Harley.

The park raised cash with a raffle and educational talks to highlight the fact that only 450 Amur tigers survive in the wild in their native Russia.

Trustee Cheryl Williams said: “We are delighted to support any efforts to save these incredible animals.

“Visitors love the Amur Tigers and we are confident that if we keep up the global effort they can be brought back from the brink of extinction.

“So far this year we have raised over £5,000.”

The population of wild tigers has fallen from 100,000 to 3,000 in the last century.

International Tiger Day took place last Friday.
