Danny Willett's route to glory in Race To Dubai is laid out

The Sheffield golfer heads into the season-closing DP World Tour Championship in Dubai trailing leader Henrik Stenson by 299,676 points.

Only a win this weekend would guarantee Willett the top spot in Race To Dubai without having to concern himself with the performance of others.

Otherwise, a series of permutations will come into play as four men chase the title of Europe’s leading player.

A win for Willett would only occur if he finishes within the top four at the DP World Tour Championship and the higher he finishes, the less he will rely on the performances of others.

Rory McIlroy is the rank outsider of the four and needs to triumph on Sunday to have any chance of taking top spot. In that case, Stenson would have to finish outside the top 45, Willett outside the top five and other contender Alex Noren outside the top two.

Should Noren win, Willett’s hopes would be over but Stenson would have to finish outside the top two for his fellow Swede to be crowned European number one.

Noren can also win the Race To Dubai with a second placed finish this week, provided Stenson finishes outside the top ten and Willett outside the top two.

If Willett was to finish fourth, Stenson would need to be outside the top 30 for the Sheffield ace to top the order of merit.

A third place finish would need to be met by Stenson failing to break into the top nine.

Should Willett finish second, Stenson must be outside the top two and Noren not triumph for him to claim the Race To Dubai crown.

Stenson would take the crown if none of these scenarios play out.
