Danny Willett dedicates Masters win to wife Nicole

It takes an understanding wife to allow her husband to fly more than 4,000 miles across the world six days after welcoming their first child into the world.

So it is fair to say that Danny Willett is full of gratitude towards wife Nicole after becoming Masters champion on Sunday night.

The Sheffield golfer is on top of the world both professionally and personally after claiming golf’s iconic Green Jacket a mere 12 days after the birth of son Zachariah James.

And he dedicated his incredible triumph to his wife back home.

“Over the last five years since I met Nic, she’s gone through a lot of ups and downs,” the 28-year-old said.

“When I first met Nic, I was injured badly with my back and I was taking a lot of time off. She thought it was all rosy me being at home six months a year.

“She’s been there through thick and thin. The long practice days, being grumpy when things aren’t going your way.

“Travelling the world, as beautiful as it is, it’s tough living out of a suitcase and going from hotel to hotel and never really having a proper base.

“I’ve got massive thanks for everything that she does for me.

“I gess only she truly knows what’s gone on and how hard I’ve worked over the last few years to come to this point.

“I’ll take this little Green Jacket back for her.”

The former City School - now Outwood Academy - pupil has a huge year ahead of him as he looks to build on his Masters triumph.

Willett sits eighth in the world rankings and will certainly make his debut for Europe in the Ryder Cup in late September, while representing Britain at the Olympics is a major possibility.

So with a new baby at home, he recognises he will have plenty to juggle.

He said: “It’s all good and well practicing for 12 hours a day but I don’t think that’s going to get you many brownie points if you’ve got to do the dishes, change the little one’s nappy and do other things like that.

“Time management, weighing everything up and making sure that not only are you trying to be a great golfer, but you’re trying to be a great person, husband, father and all that stuff as well.”

Winning The Masters brings all sorts of duties to attend to but Willett could not hide his desire to get home as quickly as possible to wife and son.

He said: “Words cannot describe what I’m feeling but words definitely can’t describe how I was feeling last Tuesday when I got to hold something that me and my wife have made.

“It’s just all been incredibly surreal.

“I’m just looking forward to getting back home and spending some time with them.”
