Mohammed Mohsen was spotted driving dangerously by police as he left a car park in a black Range Rover on Carver Street at around midnight on Saturday, December 23 - one of the busiest nights of the year for revellers.

Sheffield Magistrates' Court heard the officers, who were on foot, tried to stop the car, which belonged to the dad of one of Mohsen's friends.

Paul Manning, prosecuting, said: "At around midnight on December 23, officers were standing on Carver Street in Sheffield when they saw a black Range Rover leave a car park being driven dangerously and almost knocked a pedestrian over.

"The vehicle crashed into a Vauxhall Insignia and street furniture before it came to a stop on wasteland."

Mr Manning said Mohsen, 25, of Staniforth Road, Darnall, was arrested at the scene of the collision.

He added that Mohsen gave 'no comment' answers during his police interview.

Miss Nicola Hale, mitigating, said Mohsen, had no previous driving offences and had tried to hire a car for the night but wasn't able to due to his age.

She said: "His friend's father, who was the owner of the car, did him a favour - and I say favour in inverted commas - and said he could have his car for the evening.

"The really unfortunate thing about this situation is that when the defendant spoke to the police, because he was not insured, he panicked and drove off and drove straight through a red light.

"The unfortunate part to it is that if he stopped he would have got six points and not be in this situation."

Bench chair Jayne Revill adjourned sentencing until April 23 to allow a pre-sentence report to be completed and released Mohsen on unconditional bail.

She also imposed an interim driving disqualification.
