Daily papers at library

Have your say

I was sad to read the recent letter regarding the seeming double dealing of Sheffield City Council with respect to closing Walkley Library.

It appears that the council are hell bent on closure and hence will resort to any tactic necessary to achieve their aim as usual despite public opinion.

However, on a different note, having been brought up and lived in the Walkley area for the first 16 years of my life, I can remember visiting Walkley Library on an almost daily basis back in the 1960s; and seem to recall a little ante-room containing the daily newspapers that were attached to the reading table by a thin metal chain as if in an effort to prevent the said newspapers being “borrowed” on a permanent basis!

Though given that I may be labouring under a false memory, I was therefore wondering if any of your readers can remember such. And if my recollection is indeed accurate, then, enlighten me as to whether or not the tactic proved successful.
