A POPULAR cycle trail on an old railway line through the Peak District has been closed temporarily so work can take place to reopen four tunnels on the route.

The Peak District National Park Authority is improving the Monsal Trail between Bakewell and Wye Dale by opening new sections through the tunnels – blocked since 1968 – for cyclists, walkers and horse riders.

Work is part of the £2.25 million Pedal Peak District project, which has also included a campaign to encourage more people to go cycling.

The trail from Upperdale to Monsal Head will be closed until mid-March to enable the work to be carried out.
