Cyclist injured after braking

A MOUNTAIN biker from Sheffield was airlifted to hospital after flying over his handlebars when he braked to avoid an oncoming vehicle.

The 47-year-old was cycling with a group of friends at Longstone Edge, Bakewell, on Sunday when he was injured.

He was treated at the scene by a mountain rescue team doctor and paramedics from two air ambulances scrambled to the incident to help the stricken cyclist.

Neil Carruthers, Buxton Mountain Rescue Team leader, said: “This man was very ill.

“We worked with the East Midlands Ambulance Service, medical crews from the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance Service and the Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire Air Ambulance to stabilise him and get him to hospital care as soon as possible.”

Edale Mountain Rescue Team was also called.
