Customer money 'safe' despite hacking threat say Sheffield-based money lender

A Sheffield-based money lender has insisted its customer's money is 'safe' despite hackers' threats.

Sheffield Credit Union was the victim of a cyber attack on February 14 which saw the company's member data 'harvested' by hackers.

The perpetrators are now saying they will make the data they stole public - but bosses at the union say they are confident there is no threat to members' money.

They said: "We wish to reassure all our members that their money in the credit union is safe."

"All members of Sheffield Credit Union have been sent a letter advising them of the incident and what steps to take. Any member who requires further information should contact the credit

union on 0114 276 0787.

"South Yorkshire Police and Action Fraud are fully involved with this matter, and the relevant statutory authorities have been contacted including the Information Commissioner’s Office, the

Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority.

"The credit union’s IT security has been reviewed and increased to protect against further events of this nature and all of our computer systems have been professionally checked.

"We are also ensuring that we support and help our members and have recommended that they keep a regular check on their bank accounts and credit reports to check for any unexpected activity which, if found, should be reported to their bank (if it is a banking matter) and Action Fraud.

"In addition, any member wishing to start paying into their credit union account should check with us on 0114 276 0787 and confirm the bank details to use.

"Any existing member making payments using our bank account should not make any alteration to their payments without checking with us first."
