Betfred, lead sponsor of the World Snooker Championship taking place at the Crucible in Sheffield, has handed over the money to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.

The firm promised to give £200 to the North Anston charity for every century break in this year’s tournament.

The standard of play has been high as ever, and Alan McManus’ break of 107 took the total number of 100-breaks past 70. The record of 86 was set last year.

Betfred added some extra to the pot to get to the £25,000 total.

“It’s wonderful,” said Alan, a three-time Crucible semi-finalist. “On behalf of all the players if we can raise a few quid from being fortunate enough to play at this beautiful place and pot a few balls then it’s all good.

“These guys do fantastic work and we’re very proud to be associated with Bluebell Wood.”

Betfred’s head of media Mark Pearson made the donation pledge at the official launch of the tournament on April 15. The final will be held at the Crucible on Monday.

Mark said: “I’ve seen first-hand the incredible work that this organisation carries out, so it’s our absolute pleasure to make this donation.

“They have a real positive presence here at the Crucible Theatre and the surrounding Tudor Square, and have become synonymous with the tournament.”
