Restorative justice brings victims and perpetrators of crime into communication with each other to help repair the harm done.

Some young people in Rotherham wrote to their victims, which included a shop keeper, to apologise for their offences – the nature of which are unknown. The youngsters also apologised to police for wasting their time.

One letter read: “I am very sorry for everything I have done and wasting your time when you could have been out catching real criminals.

“I have learnt my lesson never to get in trouble with the law again.”

A spokesperson for Rotherham South neighbourhood policing team said: “Restorative justice is at the centre of our work in communities and victim care. Ideal when victims and perpetrators have to move forward afterwards and come into contact in the future.”
