Yobs launch fireworks at each other in Sheffield as police inundated with complaints

Three separate reports were made about a large group of youths hurling fireworks at each other on Devonshire Green last night.

They were also accused of launching fireworks into the street.

In total, there were 12 complaints about fireworks across Sheffield last night.

Youths were seen setting off fireworks in the street and down gennels between homes on Boundary Road, Wybourn.

Fireworks were also set off in the street on Saxonlea Avenue, Manor, where there have been previous issues.

And there were also reports of fireworks and bangers being set off in the middle of the night on Fulmere Road, Parson Cross.

In just under a week police call handlers in South Yorkshire have answered 82 calls relating to children in possession of fireworks.

Reports have included youths throwing a firework while on a bus, fireworks being thrown into gardens, small fires being set on wasteland and youths throwing fireworks at vehicles and pedestrians.

A group of youths was also reported for setting off fireworks on Abbeydale Road and in Mount Pleasant Park, Meersbrook.

Police patrols are traditionally stepped up at this time of year.

Chief Superintendent Sarah Poolman said: “We are already seeing an increase of incidents of anti-social behaviour involving children and fireworks.

“Fireworks are dangerous, they pose a risk to people’s safety and their property, as well as causing distress to many people living nearby.

“We know Halloween and Bonfire Night will be different this year for everyone, but anti-social use of fireworks is incredibly dangerous and frightening for victims and witnesses.

“We are taking a zero-tolerance approach to this and I urge parents to support us in relaying this message.”

Last week, a sixteen-year-old was arrested in connection to one incident.

Chf Supt Poolman added: “This sort of behaviour is not only unacceptable and dangerous, these youths are also wasting valuable resources from police and the fire service.

“We have a limited amount of resources to respond to incidents. By helping us teach children that this is not acceptable, you will help us respond to those most in need and danger.”
