Police officers were called to another disturbance in Page Hall at 3am yesterday as a large crowd gathered in Wade Street during the commotion – leading to more calls for the army to be brought in.

Residents across Sheffield are worried about large numbers of the Page Hall community seemingly ignoring social distancing measures brought in to reduce the spread of coronavirus.

There have been a number of complaints to South Yorkshire Police about crowds and groups gathering during lockdown.

A video shared earlier this month captured around 100 people in Popple Street during a disturbance, leading to calls for more police and council action.

There were also calls for soldiers to be brought in to enforce law and order and social distancing.

The latest video has generated similar calls.

Ian Holmes said the area had become ‘absolutely lawless’.

“Always been a bit bad down there but this is a different level,” he said.

Gail Dunwell said: “I drove through on the way home from work at 6.30pm and there were groups of people everywhere, not even going anywhere, grown men just hanging around street corners.

“The law abiding residents must be so upset and scared. Something must be done to help them.”

Jeanette Ainsworth added: “Time now for more drastic action this has gone to far now.”

And Hazel Kennedy said: “Yet again I say, if it can’t be resolved, get the army in to patrol the area and control it. People have a human right to feel safe in their own area.”

South Yorkshire Police said officers were called to Wade Street following reports of a disturbance involving a man and a small group of people at 3am yesterday.

A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of public order offences.

The force said the disturbance ‘attracted a number of onlookers, who were swiftly dispersed’ by officers.
