Worries over mystery metal detector man in Sheffield park sparks police appeal

A mystery metal detectorist is at the centre of a police investivation, after complaints he is damaging one of Sheffield’s parks.

Users of Richmond Park have complained that the man has been digging up areas of the land in the park, which is used by residents as a place for their children to play and to exercise.

It also has a number of football pitches.

South Yorkshire Police’s Sheffield South East neighbourhood policing team revealed they had been made aware of the concerns, and have issued an appeal for witnesses and information, adding they may treat what he has been doing as criminal damage.

A spokesman said: “We have received reports of a person using a metal detector in Richmond Park and digging up areas of the land.

"This park belongs to Sheffield City Council Parks and Countryside and as such, it is possible that these actions could be recorded by us as criminal damage. If anyone has witnessed this or has any information about this, please contact us.”

Residents have already commented on his actions on social media.

One resident said she had seen the man digging near the landmark big rock in the park.

Another described seeing him on the old Stradbroke College site on Monday.

Another described seeing him digging near the top football pitch the rock.

The organisation Friends of Richmond Park says it is also aware of the man.

The 60 acre site has in recent years held an annual community fun day, football training, and activities with the rangers service.
