Woman cut free from car and airlifted to hospital after two vehicle smash on busy Sheffield road

The crash in Handsworth between its junction with Beaver Hill Road and Old Retford Road happened yesterday evening just after 7pm left one woman trapped in her car and had to be freed by firefighters before she was airlifted to hospital.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: “Following the head on collision an off-duty police officer and other road users who were on the scene said one of the cars was smoking and a woman was trapped in a vehicle so they tried to break the windows to get to her.”

The woman was freed after the roof of her silver Peugeot 308 was cut off and she was taken to Northern General Hospital.

The spokesperson said: “The driver and passenger of a red WV Golf, two Asian males both around 5’8’’ one wearing a grey tracksuit with red details and the other with a darker grey tracksuit and black trainers, got out of the car and collapsed on the ground. They were taken also taken to Norther General Hospital by a member of the public before emergency services arrived.

“The road remained shut to clear the blast debris, the vehicles have been recorded and retained as part of the forensic investigation and we are investigating the manner of driving which led to the head on collision.”
