Sheffield Magistrates’ Court heard on September 23 how Scott Anthony Rickson, aged 39, of Cawthorne Road, Barugh Green, Barnsley, used racially-abusive language while speaking to a staff member at a One Stop store and he also insulted an off-duty PCSO at an ASDA store.

Kirsty Pearson, prosecuting, said: “The defendant entered the One Stop shop to use the cash machine and was told by a member of staff he needed to leave because he was barred.”

However, Rickson became aggressive and used racially-abusive language while speaking to a staff member at the store in June, 2019, and he swore and shouted abuse in front of others, according to Ms Pearson.

Rickson also abused a female off-duty PCSO when the defendant had been in a long queue of customers at an ASDA store in Barnsley in April, 2020.

Ms Pearson said Rickson came to the front of the queue shouting and swearing and when the off-duty officer told him to stop swearing he insulted her.

The PCSO took photographs of Rickson during the incident at the ASDA store, according to Ms Pearson.

Rickson pleaded guilty to using racially aggravated threatening behaviour and to using threatening behaviour during the incident at the One Stop store in Barnsley.

He also admitted using threatening behaviour during the incident at the ASDA store in Barnsley.

The defendant also admitted breaching a conditional discharge which had previously been imposed for a theft.

John Booth, defending, said: “He has to accept that this is not the way to go about doing things.”

He added: “Mr Rickson is a man who wears his heart on his sleeve and he knows himself he is his own worst enemy and he really should count to ten but he needs to get it out of his system.”

Mr Booth added Rickson has some grief issues after his partner died and he has been the victim of an extremely violent attack in the past.

Magistrates fined Rickson £180 and ordered him to pay a £32 victim surcharge and £85 costs.
