The car was tracked across the city by South Yorkshire Police’s fixed-wing plane, before finally coming to a stop in the Woodthorpe area.

The force said the chase had begun after a man stole car keys from an address in the city.

The plane could be seen circling the city centre and Sheffield’s eastern estates for around an hour on Tuesday night before the chase was brought to an end.

Eyewitnesses in Woodthorpe said the driver finally crashed into a tree on the old college fields at Richmond, and was later towed away by a recovery van.

At least one of the suspects in the car, however, manage to run off before police could catch up to them, the eyewitness added.

A South Yorkshire Poice spokesperson said: “It is reported that at around 8.40pm yesterday evening, a man knocked on a victim's door and forced his way inside to grab a set of house keys, which we believe were mistaken for car keys, before fleeing the scene.

"Around five minutes later, the same man is believed to have knocked on the door of another property and attacked the occupant before stealing his car keys and vehicle.

“A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with both incidents.

“Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting incident number 877 of 21 July.”
