A large crowd gathered on and around Popple Street in Page Hall yesterday as a heated disturbance developed.

Mobile phone footage shows residents clearly ignoring social distancing measures introduced to try to prevent the spread of coronavirus as they either became embroiled in the incident or observed in groups.

Police officers arrived and the crowd eventually dispersed.

Yesterday’s incident is one of a number in Page Hall where social distancing breaches have occurred and been reported to the police.

They led to officers posting leaflets through homes in the area explaining lockdown laws and the importance of social distancing.

Posting on Facebook, Rita Hadley said: “We'll never get rid off the virus while people keep doing this.”

Emma Billingham added: “What on earth is a matter with these people. South Yorkshire Police need to be permanently on site obviously.”

A number of residents have called for the army to be brought into the area to enforce the rules.

Mary Lilley said; “Bring the army in to the area for a few months and enforce good order and behaviour.

“This is our country so take control of it.”

South Yorkshire Police said: “We received a call at 5.33pm yesterday to reports of people fighting on Popple Street. “It is reported the group were in the street causing disorder. “Upon officers’ arrival an ambulance was called for a 20-year-old woman. She was discharged on scene with minor injuries.“Enquiries are ongoing.”
