War medals were stolen from two homes in Barnsley in the space of two weeks.

In the first burglary on Wakefield Road, Athersley, between 2pm and 4.15pm on Tuesday, October 21, jewellery and a medal from World War One were taken.

Between 4.10pm and 6.30pm on Saturday, November 1 jewellery and a collection of medals from both the First and Second World Wars were taken from a property in Blacker Road, Mapplewell, in another burglary.

Detective Sergeant Paul Brook, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “The items that have been taken are of significant sentimental value to the victims and therefore irreplaceable.

“As we commemorate the centenary of the First World War, we are asking anyone who may have been offered the medals to come forward and help us locate these items.”

One of the medals is gold with a blue ribbon and was awarded for efforts in the First World War.

Another medal is of Royal Air Force wings on a blue, grey and white ribbon, issued for the Second World War.

Some medals are engraved with the name ‘Arthur Naylor’.
