Julia Robinson, from Woodseats, had “popped down” to Aldi on Archer Road at around 5pm on Wednesday and was barely in the shop for 10 minutes. When she returned to her car, however, the back window had been smashed in by rocks thought to have been thrown from allotments at the back of Hutcliffe Wood Cemetery.

Another shopper – a woman who only went to the supermarket to purchase one item – had her back window smashed in by rocks.

“It was horrible to watch,” Julia said.

"It’s not the first time they have done it. The shock was seeing what could have been.”

The police were called but a spokesperson told The Star the perpetrators had fled by the time they arrived. Enquiries are now underway.

Julia said: “The charges shouldn’t just be criminal damage, it should be a lot stronger.

“I just feel shock and it exasperates any anxiety you have already about the coronavirus.”

To make matters worse, Julia’s car insurance does not include windscreen cover.

“I can’t afford to have it fixed before payday at the end of the month,” she said.

“I’m concerned that it’s an indicator of how other people are going to behave if they don’t get some kind of enforcement on the streets. It could have killed someone.”
