Urgent warning issued after ‘morons’ start fire in a tree near Sheffield golf course

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have issued a warning after a fire was deliberately started in a tree in the woods near Birley Wood Golf Course in Sheffield.

The fire service were called at 8:05pm on Monday evening to Birley Wood Golf Course on Birley Lane. One crew from Birley Moor attended and were on scene for about 40 minutes in total.

A spokesperson for SYFR said: “The fire was believed to have been started deliberately.

"Setting any deliberate fire is dangerous. Members of the public can help us and the police by reporting people who you know are starting fires in your area. “To do this, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Local resident Tony Godbehere, who took the photo of the fire, said: “Walking back from Ridgeway tonight and came across this in Birley Woods. What sort of morons think this is a clever thing to do?”
