Dozens of travellers moved onto Catcliffe Recreation Ground earlier this month and spent around a week there before leaving on Friday.

Rubbish, bags of waste and a discarded tyre, chair, gas bottle and pet carrier were among items left behind along with human excrement.

The recreation ground was closed as a precaution for the clean-up work to be carried out.

Sharing photographs of how the land was left after the travellers left, Catcliffe Parish Council said in a Facebook post: “Just a few pics of what was left. They don't show the amount of human excrement left behind around the local area.

“Although we have closed the ground we accept there may be ingress by individuals. Please note this is at your own risk.

“We'd like to thank all residents for their comments and support during this difficult week.”
