A Sheffield Wednesday fan, who shared the photo, said the incident happened shortly before kick off today.

The fan, who had been on the tram behind, said: “Between Hillsborough tram stop and the stop before, the road was blocked by the police. We were told to leave the tram due to being stuck and upon leaving the tram we saw the door of the tram pictured on the floor with Millwall fans climbing out.

“Whilst walking by, another door at the front was kicked out and more fans left the crowded tram. The police surrounded the fans to try to shepherd them towards the ground.”
