Laura Elizabeth Higgs, aged 30, of Crookes Lane, Carlton, Barnsley, assaulted the two female police officers after they had been called out to a domestic incident at her home, according to a Sheffield Magistrates’ Court hearing on June 17.

Kirsty Pearson, prosecuting, said: “Officers attended a domestic incident that is not before the court today and had cause to arrest the defendant and she was placed in handcuffs and became aggressive with officers.”

Ms Pearson added Higgs bit one officer causing reddening and spat in the face of the other during the incident on June 15.

Higgs, who has a previous conviction for assaulting a police officer by spitting, pleaded guilty to the two assaults.

Kevin Ripley, defending, said there had been an incident at Higgs’s home and she had walked away to give her and her partner space but she was arrested upon her return.

The court - sitting at the Sheffield Crown Court building - heard no further action is to be taken regarding the domestic incident call-out.

Mr Ripley added Higgs had a very difficult time as a teenager and has mental health issues and accepts she needs help with anger management.

District Judge Naomi Redhouse told Higgs spitting is a serious matter because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Higgs was sentenced to four-weeks of custody suspended for 12-months but warned any breach will mean prison. She must also pay £30 to each of the police officers in compensation.
