Teenagers jailed over knife-point robberies in Sheffield

A 15-year-old boy from Rotherham and a 17-year-old boy from Sheffield, neither of whom can be named for legal reasons, both admitted two counts of robbery, with the younger teenager also pleading guilty to one count of possessing an offensive weapon and the older boy admitting a third count of possessing a bladed article.

The pair appeared at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday, March 9, when they were each sentenced to two years in prison and handed restraining orders.

They were arrested following two robberies in the space of just over a fortnight last year, in which the same 16-year-old boy was targeted on both occasions.

In the early hours of November 26, the pair approached their victim on Pinstone Street in the city centre and threatened him with a knife and a baton, forcing him to hand over his wallet and watch.

On the evening of December 11, the young victim was approached on Coleridge Road in Attercliffe, threatened with a knife and forced to hand over his wallet and watch.

The pair were arrested the day after the second offence, following extensive CCTV work.

PC Zareen Gulzar, from South Yorkshire Police’s robbery team, who led the investigation, said: “I welcome this sentencing. The two boys displayed an extreme level of violence in committing these robberies, using knives and a baton to threaten and intimidate their victim.

“I commend the victim’s bravery in coming forward and reporting what happened to him.”
