Police said they were called at 12.25am on Thursday, May 21, to reports of an attempted break-in at Barnardo’s charity shop on Abbeydale Road.

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said a man, aged 18, was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary and criminal damage, and had since been released under investigation.

Barnardo’s said the damage would cost the children’s charity ‘a lot of money’ to repair at a time when the shop is closed and it is struggling for funds due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It is understood that the windows at the Tesco Express next door to Barnardo’s were also damaged, though the supermarket remained open on Thursday afternoon.
