South Yorkshire Police say the pursuit started as one of their highways officers spotted a silver Land Rover Freelander in Thurcroft, Rotherham.

The driver of the Land Rover failed to stop, and a chase started through Whiston, Swallownest and onto the A57, during which police said the driver took evasive and dangerous measures to evade police contact.

Officers stopped the chase in the interests of public safety - but then the police air service and police dogs became involved.

The car was then spotted by the air service on Brook Close in Aston and with thermal imaging and specialised technology, four suspects who were believed to have fled the vehicle, could be seen in nearby gardens and shrubbery.

Sergeant Adam Renshaw, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “Those who use the road network to commit criminality are more likely to take greater risks. They show a complete disregard for anyone’s safety, and their actions pose a risk to innocent people.

“Within our team, we are all experienced roads policing officers and have sadly seen the devastation caused on our roads, and we are committed to intercepting those who pose that risk through their criminality.

“Further checks of the vehicle highlighted to officers to that it had been reported stolen a few hours earlier.

“At the heart of our work is a victim. These criminals have no regard for their actions, and it’s our job to bring them to justice and stop people becoming hurt by their actions, and this job highlighted the reasons why we do what we do. It is not only the impact on the victim, it is the danger posed to the wider public and our communities.”

The teenagers have been released on police bail while investigations continue.
