A teenage boy has been arrested on suspicion of affray after a man was chased through Rotherham town centre.

The 17-year-old has been questioned by South Yorkshire Police over the incident in Wellgate in which a 22-year-old man was chased by two men while he was getting into a taxi with friends.

The suspect has been bailed by police pending further inquiries.

Police Constable Rick Revitt said: “We are very grateful to the public who have so far come forward to provide us with information about this incident.

“We know that CCTV images have been shared on social media in relation to this incident. We have chosen not to release CCTV images at this time as it puts our investigation at risk and jeopardises our ongoing enquiries to identify those responsible.

“We appreciate and understand that this incident has caused some significant distress in the local community and I want to reassure the public that a thorough and comprehensive investigation is being carried out and will continue.

“We’re still keen to hear from anyone that may have witnessed the chase or who holds any information about suspicious activity in the Wellgate area around that time.”

The men believed to have been responsible for the incident were Asian and skinny.

One is believed to have been wearing a light top and dark jeans.

Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 44 of August 23.
