Sunbathers caught in Sheffield park as police deal with 100 lockdown breaches in just one area

South Yorkshire Police responded to no fewer than 98 breaches of lockdown in just one area of Sheffield during the month of April.

That number only consists of incidents officers were called to and does not include the “vast number of people” officers have come across while out on patrol, a spokesperson for Sheffield North West neighbourhood policing group said.

As a result, the actual number of breaches police in this area dealt with is expected to be considerably higher.

On Thursday, officers moved on several people sunbathing in Crookes Valley Park. Police said many of the sunbathers claimed “they didn't know about the regulations”, despite a public information campaign and countless reminders since they came into force six weeks ago.

None of them were issued with a fine, police confirmed.

The spokesperson added: “We will continue to patrol over the weekend, but please, for your own health stay home unless you have a reasonable excuse to leave.”
