Big rise in speeding in Sheffield's 20 and 30mph zones, new figures reveal
“Driving is a great responsibility and we would urge people in South Yorkshire to do their part and stick to speed limits”
Police have issued a statement amid a big rise in speeding - including one driver caught doing 94mph in a 30 zone.
The force set out how it was tackling the crime after recorded offences in 30mph zones hit 22,411 last year, up from 19,982 in 2024 and 17,949 the year before.

On 20mph roads, 1,363 speeders were caught in 2025, compared to 1,144 in 2024 and just 219 the year before.
The top speeds among offenders were 94mph in a 30mph zone and 42mph in a 20mph zone.
The figures were provided by South Yorkshire Police in response to a Freedom of Infomation request from Marshall Motor Group, one of the UK's largest motor retailers.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said speeding is one of the biggest factors in fatal and serious crashes - and urged people to “do their part” and stick to the limit.

They added: “We regularly carry out proactive speed watch operations targeting drivers who are going over the speed limit, and we also work alongside local authorities to install speed cameras.
“Neighbourhood policing teams also work with volunteer groups on community speed watch initiatives with the aim of educating drivers, reducing collisions and improving road safety in local areas.
“Driving is a great responsibility, and we would urge people in South Yorkshire to do their part and stick to speed limits in order to keep our roads safe.”
Ben Welham, motoring expert at Marshall Motor Group, said: “20mph and 30mph limits are typically found in more built up areas, where pedestrians, cyclists and other road users are more common.
“Even small increases in speed can significantly reduce reaction times and increase stopping distances, which is why lower speed limits are often used around residential areas, schools and busy urban roads.
“Speeds such as 94mph in a 30mph zone are an extreme example, but even smaller increases over the speed limit can put lives in danger, which is why it’s so important to stay within the law.”
