Remey Ellis became abusive after drinking on the morning of June 7 and chased the woman outside his house in Rotherham.

Grabbing her by the arms he flung her mobile phone into a field, and when she returned he caught her by the wrists and slammed her into a door several times.

His grip was so hard he caused her metal watch strap to lacerate her wrist, damaging a tendon and causing a deep gash which needed surgery.

Outside the house he "bullied and blamed" her until an delivery driver approached them and waited with her until police arrived.

The court heard how Ellis was violent throughout their relationship, and earlier, on February 9, was "raging" after he was locked out.

"I swear I will kill you and shoot your brother in the face and if your mum comes I will stab her," he shouted. She was so scared he was going to fetch a knife, she fled the house and found a police officer.

The court heared he assaulted her on six separate occasions while on bail.

On May 25, he kept her prisoner over night, and when she tried to escape through a window dragged her back. He threatened to cut his own wrists and texted her friends, pretending to be her.

He has previous convictions for possessing Class B drugs, in 2017, and resisting a constable, in 2018.

Ian West, mitigating, said Ellis was genuinely remorseful and sought solace in alcohol and drugs after a work-related accident.

He said Ellis has spent three months on remand and urged the judge to suspend the sentence.

Ellis, 28, of Thundercliffe Road, pleaded guilty to putting a person in fear of violence through harassment and unlawful wounding, after intially denying the charges.

On Friday, Recorder Paul Kirtley imposed an 18 month sentence, suspended for two years, with 30 days of rehabilitation, a six month drug programme and the “building better relationships” course. A five year restraining order was made.
