South Yorkshire thug who attacked partner twice narrowly spared from prison

Sheffield Crown Court heard today, October 9, how Connot Binns, aged 22, of Pontefract Road, Cudworth, Barnsley, kicked and pushed his partner in February during a break to Blackpool and during a second incident in July in Barnsley he grabbed and kicked her.
James Gould, prosecuting, said: “The relationship was good but things started to deteriorate at the start of this year.”

Hide AdDuring the break in February, Binns saw his partner had added someone to her Snapchat account and he became moody, according to Mr Gould, and he threw warm coffee over her in the hotel, kicked her back and pushed her before she locked herself in the bathroom.
Mr Gould said the couple also had an argument about the defendant’s drug use when they were together in Barnsley in July and the complainant said she would leave him if he did not stop taking drugs.
After she went to pack her bags, he pinned her down with his knees and wrapped himself around her and as she tried to leave he pulled her back and put a pillow to her mouth and after getting away she returned for her phone only for the defendant to kick her, according to Mr Gould.
Binns pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Hide AdRichard Canning, defending, said Binns has struggled while he has been remanded in custody.
He added: “It’s his first taste of custody and it has had a salutary effect. He’s not found his time easy. He’s been bullied, he’s been isolated and he is desperate to get out.
"He has been warned in strict terms if he is given an opportunity and he does not take advantage of it he will return.”
Judge Michael Slater told Binns: “It seems to me you presently pose a risk to partners and that risk can be best addressed by the intervention of the probation service.”

Hide AdHe sentenced Binns to a 12 months of custody suspended for two years with a rehabilitation requirement and a Building Better Relationships programme. He was also given a five-year restraining order.
