South Yorkshire Police officer dies following crash while on duty in Sheffield

A South Yorkshire Police officer has died following a vehicle collision while responding to an incident in Sheffield today.

Police said a marked police motorcycle collided with a blue Toyota Avensis on Nether Lane in the Ecclesfield area at around 1pm this afternoon (21 April).

The police vehicle had been responding to reports of a silver BMW failing to stop for officers when the crash took place.

The 40-year-old police officer who was on the bike was sadly pronounced dead a short time after the crash. His family are currently being supported by specialist officers.

The officer has not yet been named.

The driver of the Toyota, a 59-year-old man, was taken to hospital with minor injuries where he remains at this time.

The road was completely closed this afternoon while emergency services dealt with the incident. It remains shut, police said. A picture posted online showed about six emergency services vehicles at the scene.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision, or anyone who has information about what happened, to come forward. They also want to hear from anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage.

A statement from South Yorkshire Police said: “A marked police motorcycle was responding to an incident at around 1pm this afternoon (21 April) when it was in collision with a blue Toyota Avensis on Nether Lane in the Ecclesfield area of Sheffield. The police vehicle was responding to reports of a silver BMW failing to stop for officers.

“The 40-year-old police officer who was on the bike, was sadly pronounced dead a short time after the collision. The driver of the Toyota, a 59-year-old man, was taken to hospital with minor injuries where he remains at this time.

“Our specialist officers are supporting the officer’s family and the driver of the Avensis. The road remains closed at this time and drivers are asked to avoid the area if possible as enquiries continue.”
