South Yorkshire Police said a silver Vauxhall Astra and grey BMW One Series were travelling along Warren Vale, Swinton, towards Woodman roundabout when the BMW driver lost control and veered onto the opposite side of the carriageway into the path of oncoming traffic.

The BMW driver, an 18-year-old man, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

The police officer also suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

They are both in a stable condition today.

The collision occurred at 9.15pm yesterday.

The driver of the Vauxhall Astra, an 18-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving.

Witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 and quote incident number 846 of March 25.
