South Yorkshire Police have started enforcing the government’s new lockdown rules in Sheffield.

New laws mean officers now have powers to fine and even arrest people ignoring the government's advice to stay at home and avoid non-essential travel.

On Friday, police launched their Educational Road Checkpoints across South Yorkshire.

A picture tweeted from Paul McCurry, head of South Yorkshire Police’s operational support unit, showed several officers stationed on Crookesmoor Road stopping motorists.

A police plane was also spotted flying low over Sheffield, with reports of riot vans and traffic police cars parked at the top of Bolehills Park in Crookes.

In a tweet, superintendent McCurry said: “The Government has been clear that it expects people to do the right thing in order to #ProtectTheNHS #SaveLives it is really important that people #StayAtHomeSaveLives

Police have also started deploying a drone in the Peak District to spot people ignoring the new rules.
