Officers checking Graham Simpson's computer found a photo album containing images of naked girls aged between eight and 13, on January 23, 2018.

"He said he had been trying to find old friends on a naturists' website," said prosecutor Ian Mullarkey. "He told officers "I am guessing I clicked on something I shouldn't have."

"He said he didn't know how they got there as he wasn't interested in that kind of stuff."

Checks revealed that between July 2016 and December 2017, Simpson used internet search terms including "paedo land" and "child porn", and had downloaded 45 Category A images, 34, Category B images, and 525 Category C images, where 'A' is the most extreme. An extreme bestiality image and indecent cartoon images of children were also found.

The court heard Simpson was jailed for eight months in 2003 for 14 offences of making indecent images of children, and had been put on the Sex Offenders' Register indefinitely.

Ruth Newnham, mitigating, asked Judge David Dixon to consider a suspended sentence so Simpson could undergo rehabilitation that would help him "go beyond denial about his behaviour."

But the judge asked: "What faith will I have that he will cooperate - bearing in mind he lied about his internet searches?"

Ms Newnham said Simpson became isolated after caring for his ex-partner and mother, who died in 2014.

"If he goes back to prison he will be with serious sex offenders who will have an influence on him," she said.

Simpson, 64, of New Smithy Drive, Barnsley, admitted five counts of possessing indecent images, on December 10.

The judge told him: "You maintain that you have stumbled across these images. That is a lie.

"You were searching for such materials for six months or more.

"The court has come to the conclusion that you still have an unhealthy interest in children. And you are still complicit in causing harm to children.”

Simpson received 27 months in prison. A Sexual Harm Prevention Order was imposed for 15 years, until Simpson is 79.
