Luke Shaw's victim was walking in the Mosbrough area of Barnsley, at 1.30am, on January 26, when a stolen Peugeot pulled up beside him, prosecutor Brian Outhwaite told the court.

Shaw got out and attempted to shake the man’s hand, but then tried to pull him into the car.

He verbally abused the man and punched him in the face while the Peugeot's driver got out, grabbed the man from behind, and bit his ear.

Shaw searched the man's pockets and stole a mobile phone and a bottle of alcohol. His victim was left with bruising and a black eye.

In a statement, his victim said he felt unsafe and paranoid after the attack, and afraid to leave his house. The injury to his ear would cause permanent scarring.

On Friday, the court heard Shaw has previous convictions for theft, possession of a firearm and taking without the owner's consent.

He was sentenced to 63 months in a Young Offenders' Institution in September 2014, for a serious assault.

Richard Canning, mitigating, said Shaw deserved credit for entering a guilty plea on the day of his trial.

The court heard he has served 11 months on remand.

Shaw, 25, of Conniston Road, Barnsley, pleaded guilty to theft instead of robbery, for which he was originally charged.

The Recorder of Sheffield, Judge Jeremy Richardson QC, sentenced him to 11 months and told him he would be released that afternoon.
