South Yorkshire motorist admits causing death by careless driving

A motorist has pleaded guilty to causing the death of a man by careless driving after a road traffic incident.

Sheffield Magistrates’ Court heard on Thursday, February 20, how Mathew Hill, aged 28, of Willowgarth Avenue, Brinsworth, Rotherham, had been driving a Land Rover Freelander on Bawtry Road, Rotherham, on July 21, 2018, when the incident happened.

Hill pleaded guilty to causing the death of Mitchell John Vernon by driving the Freelander without due care and attention.

The defendant also admitted causing the death while driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and when there was no policy of insurance in force.

Mitchell John Vernon died on July 22, 2018, the day after the collision happened.

District Judge Grace Leong committed the case to Sheffield Crown Court for a sentencing hearing.

Hill was also made subject to an interim driving disqualification until the sentencing hearing.
