A South Yorkshire man has been given a custodial sentence after he damaged his ex-partner's car

Sheffield Crown Court heard on April 9 how Harry Stoyles, 26, of Furlong Road, Harlington, Doncaster, damaged the vehicle at a petrol station on Prince of Wales Road, Sheffield.

Any Earnshaw, prosecuting, said the couple had been in an unsettled on-and-off relationship and when arrangements were made for the defendant to drop off their child at a petrol station the defendant was not in a good mood and wanted to see his partner’s phone and became angry.

Ms Earnshaw added: “He became angry and kicked the petrol cap of her vehicle and caused damage.”

A member of staff at the petrol station called police, according to Ms Earnshaw, after the complainant had pre-warned them things with the defendant might not go well.

Stoyles told police he still loved the complainant and she had been staying at his address on occasions.

The defendant, who has two previous convictions for damaging property, pleaded guilty to causing damage during the incident on November 11.

Judge Graham Reeds QC said Stoyles lost his temper and damaged his ex-partner's car causing £300 to £400 of damage.

He told Stoyles: “You have pleaded guilty to criminal damage and you have two previous convictions for criminal damage which makes the seriousness of your offending all the greater.”

Stoyles was sentenced to four weeks of custody but he was released because of time already spent on remand in custody.

The defendant was also given a one-year restraining order.
