South Yorkshire Crime Commissioner’s position ‘untenable’

An ‘urgent’ meeting has been called by the Police and Crime Panel in South Yorkshire, which holds the county’s Police and Crime Commissioner Shaun Wright to account.

Councillor Harry Harpham, chairman of the panel, said the Commissioner’s position had become ‘untenable’ in the wake of the child sex abuse scandal in Rotherham.

Members will meet in Rotherham next Tuesday to discuss the issue.

Coun Harpham said: “The Police and Crime Panel does not have the powers to remove the Commissioner from his position, however, I alongside several other members of the panel have made it clear that we believe Mr Wright’s position is untenable and that he no longer has the confidence of the public of South Yorkshire.”
