Smokers in Rotherham are being warned they face fines for dropping their cigarette ends.
Last week, seven culprits were convicted of littering, with some receiving fines of £400 after being found guilty in their absence.
Coun Richard Russell, Rotherham Council’s cabinet member for waste, said the cases should serve as a deterrent to others.
He said: “Improving quality of life and dealing with anti-social behaviour are priorities for the council.
“Taking pride in our neighbourhoods and keeping them free from litter, dog fouling, graffiti and fly-tipping are particular issues that are raised regularly by local people.”
