A SOUTH Yorkshire school was smoke damaged after a fire was deliberately started in the play area.

Fire crews from Dearne Station discovered the fire when they were called to a wheelie bin blaze in Coniston Road Mexborough at around 12.45am on Wednesday.

While they were at the scene firefighters noticed that a fire had also been started in the play area of Mexborough Windhill Junior and Infant School in nearby Hollingworth Close.

Both fires were quickly extinguished but not before smoke had made its way into the school through a set of patio doors.

Firefighters remained at the scene for almost two hours to ensure the school was properly ventilated.

Both fires are being investigated as deliberate.
