This photo shows the mess left behind after thieves smashed their way in to a popular Sheffield cinema’s café and bar overnight.

The raiders struck at Showroom Cinema on Paternoster Row, in Sheffield city centre, during the early hours of this morning, Thursday, July 6, at around 3am. A member of staff said two young men wearing hoods had been caught on CCTV breaking in. He said they caused a huge mess but were only believed to have taken a tablet and two bottles of cider, though police said they had also emptied a till.

CID officers were down there this morning dusting for fingerprints, and the staff member said one of the thieves had cut themselves on the glass, leaving their blood behind. The café and bar were back open as usual this morning.

South Yorkshire Police said the force was called at around 3.55am by a member of the public to report a break-in.

“It is reported that the offenders gained entry to the property where they emptied a till and removed bottles of alcohol,” a spokesperson added. “Officers attended the scene and the property was secured. Enquiries are now continuing to determine what happened.”

Showroom Cinema said it was ‘deeply saddened’ by the break-in.

Ian Wild, chief executive of Showroom Workstation, added: “Our security firm called us early this morning to inform us that our café bar had been broken into, which is never nice to hear. Thankfully there wasn’t much that could be taken due to the locking-up procedures we have in place, and the culprits were only in the building for a few minutes. They did, however, break a window pane and created a lot of mess for our team to clean up. We are working closely with South Yorkshire police on the incident.

“Showroom Café Bar is now back open as usual, serving our regular array of food and drink and welcoming guests from across the country for this year’s Children’s Media conference, which is in full swing in the cinema and across Sheffield city centre.”

Anyone with information is asked to call South Yorkshire Police on 101.
