The gun crime statistics for this year have yet to be published by the Office for National Statistics, but the latest figures show that in the year ending March 2020, there were 111 firearm discharges recorded by South Yorkshire Police.
That’s significantly more than in Humberside and North Yorkshire combined but less than half the 223 such offences recorded in West Yorkshire during the same period and lower too than the 180 in Greater Manchester.
These are some of the shootings which police in Sheffield have investigated so far this year.
9. Manor Lane and Woodthorpe Crescent
There were three shootings in the space of a week in May, which police said at the time were believed to be linked to organised crime.
The shootings happened between May 5 and 12, with two taking place on Manor Lane, Manor, and one on Woodthorpe Crescent, Woodthorpe.
Detectives believed the incidents were ‘targeted’ attacks involving people with links to organised crime.
In the first incident on Wednesday, May 5, shots were fired between the occupants of two vehicles on Manor Lane.
In the early hours of Tuesday, May 11, shots were fired towards the same house, causing damage to windows.
Just before 10.30pm on Wednesday, May 12, shots were heard in Woodthorpe and a search led to the recovery of shell casings and the discovery of minor damage to a house on Woodthorpe Crescent.
