With total disregard for who the bullets would hit – or if anyone would die – Stephen Dunford opened fire a group of children, some as young as 10, as they met on a street corner ahead of a planned cinema trip together.

He was heard to say ‘we got one’ after the gun attack as the car sped off and the group of terrified children fled.

One youngster, just 12, was shot in his thigh and because of complications surgeons have so far been unable to remove the bullet.

Another boy was said to have had a miraculous escape after a bullet hit the hood of his jacket, narrowly missing his neck and head by centimetres.

Video footage of the shooting shows children running away after the gun was fired and one taking cover behind a nearby car.

The father of the boy shot in his leg said the youngster is still affected by the gun attack today.

“He wakes up during the night and has become paranoid,” he said.

He said the family is looking to move house because of fears for their safety.

Jailing Dunford for life and ordering him to serve a minimum of 19 years for offences including attempted murder, Judge Jeremy Richardson QC said: “You pose enormous danger to the general public.”

“I wish to make it a matter of pellucid clarity that those who involve themselves with the supply of drugs and make use of firearms to protect, assist, or promote that evil trade, must receive, and will receive, very severe sentences.”

He added: “It is as plain as plain could be that you have engendered immense fear on a whole section of Sheffield and have made the lives of decent citizens bordering, if not passing into, the realm of a living nightmare.”

The judge said it was ‘only a matter of good fortune and chance' that nobody was killed.
