Blaze started after man ‘poured liquid on cars’

This was the devastation caused by a fire at a South Yorkshire home last night, after a suspected arson attack.

South Yorkshire firefighters were deployed late last after receiving a 999 call over the blaze, which initially saw two cars engulfed in flames.

They have now confirmed that they believe it was started deliberately, and police have been called in.

The burned out shell of a car remained outside the house this morning, with the front of the property blackened by the fire.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said in a statement: “Firefighters from Maltby, Rotherham, Dearne and Parkway stations were called out to two cars on fire at 10.40pm on St Johns Road, East Dene, Rotherham.

“The fire had also spread to a property. The fire is believed to have been started deliberately. Crews left the scene at 12.01am. “

South Yorkshire Police confirmed that the incident was being treated as a reported arson attack, and that someone was believed to have poured a liquid on the cars, in the incident.

They told The Star: “We were called yesterday (Sunday, July 5) at 10.47pm to reports of a suspected arson on St John's Road in Rotherham.

“It is reported a man poured liquid over two vehicles parked outside of a property which then set on fire, before fleeing the scene. It is then believed the fire spread to the property.

“No injuries were reported.”

Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or online, quoting incident number 1042 of July 5, 2026.
