Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) said the male cat, now named Buddy, however remarkably survived the horrific attack which took place on Thursday (November 26) in Gregg House Road, Shiregreen.

A local resident who had been feeding the stray cat realised he had a wound to the head and called the RSPCA, and on closer inspection, an air gun pellet fell from the wound.

Animal rescuer from RSPCA, Liz Braidley collected the poor cat and rushed him to a nearby veterinary practice for emergency treatment.

Buddy responded well and he is now in the care of RSPCA's Sheffield and District branch and the pallet wound is healing as well as an untreated abscess which he had behind his ear.

The cat was not microchipped so once he has recovered from his ordeal, he will be found a new home.

Liz is now keen to find the person responsible and is appealing for information.

She said: “It is very concerning that someone has deliberately targeted an innocent animal like this by shooting it to the front of the head. It is such a callous attack on a defenceless animal.

Hayley Crookes, animal care leader at the Sheffield branch, said: “Buddy is coming on leaps and bounds - he is such a lovely friendly cat we can’t understand why anyone would want to hurt him.”
