South Yorkshire Police said that school staff alerted officers immediately to the incident, which they believe to be ‘isolated’.

A spokesperson for Birley Academy said: “We can confirm that a student was found in possession of a bladed item last week.

"While he had absolutely no intention of using it and had brought it in to show his friend, we immediately followed our safeguarding procedures and alerted the appropriate organisations and agencies.

"Even though there was no malicious intent, we absolutely do not tolerate the introduction of any weapon or illegal item onto academy grounds. Hence our swift action on this matter.”

South Yorkshire Police said the boy’s parent had been informed. They added: “We would like to reassure parents and pupils that officers are investigating.”
