Police made the discovery at the Costa Coffee Drive-Thru at Meadowhall on Wednesday after the driver and passenger of a silver Ford Focus ‘jumped out and fled’ when they spotted officers.

A force spokesperson joked the driver should ‘have had a bit more caffeine’ after he was caught by officers from Page Hall’s dedicated policing team and arrested for Possession with Intent to Supply Controlled Drugs and immigration offences.

A Facebook post read: “A search of the battered Focus revealed there was definitely more than just the (now cold!) coffees and cheese toasties inside – a boot full of freshly cropped and bagged cannabis bud!

Police found more than nine kilograms of prepared cannabis in the boot.

"There was a total of over nine KILOGRAMS of prepared cannabis, estimated to be worth in excess of FIFTY THOUSAND POUNDS.”

The car was seized and will be forensically examined to identify the passenger following “a very costly Costa Coffee,” police said.

The driver tried to flee from police.
