Sheffield trial date on assault charge for football club manager Joey Barton

Football club manager and former England player Joey Barton is believed to be due to go on trial in court in Sheffield on Monday.

The Bristol Rovers manager and ex-Manchester City, Newcastle and Burnley midfielder is accused of assaulting a rival manager.

Barton, aged 37, of Fox Bank Close in Widnes, Cheshire, is charged with causing actual bodily harm to the then Barnsley FC manager Daniel Stendel in April 2019.

Barton was in charge at Fleetwood Town when they played Barnsley at Oakwell in a League One match on that date and Barnsley won 4-2. Barton was charged following an incident in the tunnel.

He took over at Bristol Rovers in February, who have just been relegated to League Two. Stendel is set to take over at French club Nancy.

Barton had already been granted unconditional bail ahead of his trial at a previous hearing.

The Press Association news service says that the trial will go ahead on Monday (June 7) at Sheffield Crown Court.
